I am keeping at those back- breaking, knee crunching, taxing, vexing things they call exercises these days. Since I am part of the group that does these 45 minute work outs each day, I need to keep going. Seeing others do their part makes me want to become like them. It is a competition.
I am the slowest, weakest, painful -est person in the group. Yesterday, we were told to run two rounds around the gym.To be fair, I ran one round and walked through the second. But I completed the rounds.
He split us into groups of 4, doing 6 exercises, by turn.
At first there was the roller. The trainer told us to run with the roller across the room. It seemed very easy. Don’t be deceived. It is so easy to lose one’s balance doing this exercise and my 49 year old body can ill afford to break bones at this stage. So of course, I cheated. There is always Susie’s way of doing the roller workout. A few steps walking, stopping, huffing, puffing and with extreme care I did one up and came back huffing and puffing even slower until the 5 minute whistle blew. I got away with doing just two ups and downs.
Next were press ups- which anyway I can’t do- no point even trying. How can my fragile arms lift up a 90 kg body ? Impossible ? I have not been brought up to carry heavy weights. So I got down on my knees to try to give an impression of a modified press up( women’s press up). Of course, I cheated there too. I went through the motions of the press ups, without pressing or upping.
After 5 minutes of press-ups, the next set were burpees and bench jumps. Ok, burpees, I seem to be getting better at. At least I can get on the floor like a four legged creature- and that is something for me. A short miniscule jump sufficed for the burpee jump and then I did a walk step up on the bench, which is the only exercise my ancient knees would tolerate.
Two runs around the gym wearing 10 kg weighted vests was next. And again I walked. My partners were waiting for me- huffing and puffing in their turn- because I was so late coming to hand over the vest to them, so they could do their runs.
Jumping rope is something I am familiar with- so I was happy that was next. Even here, I showed how inexperienced I was. All in all the exercises were a flop.
Why am I doing these ? I like something new and the gym is quite close to my house and the charges are affordable. So…
What hurts most ? My ego or my knees ? I am still deciding.
Oh, Susie! This was written in a most amusing manner. I had to laugh. I admire you for doing the exercises, though.

It was meant to make me laugh, Anne. You should see me in the exercise classes, waddling like a duck, shaking like a duster and sweating like – no man’s business. The good thing is I think no one is watching because the exercises are too intense for anyone to look at anyone else. Hopefully I will have something good to report in a month’s time.

Thanks AJ. For a 49 year old, I don’t even know why I am doing it. Literally every joint creaks.:)

You’re doing it because if you don’t use it, you lose it. I have a friend who works in seniors fitness and she says it’s never too late to start, just take it slow so you don’t hurt yourself

Dear AJ,
Do you have any suggestions for squats and press ups for older women- I am struggling with this. My knees creak something mean.

I joined a gym a couple years ago for all the wrong reasons – I needed to prove to myself that I was young, thin and what not. I once tried out cross fit training and that cured me of my insecurities. I decided that I’d rather be alive than young and thin!
I enjoyed the gym sessions, the CrossFit notwithstanding, but logistics worked against me.
These days I walk ten kilometers every day. That’s all.

10 kms ? Every day ?

On most days. Some days I fall short due to other commitments.

But how ? 10 K? Meaning at least 10 K steps right or more maybe ? I think a post is warranted.

10 km takes an hour and a half, Susie. My husband and I walk every day. 10 K steps works to about 8 km. If I can’t squeese in 10 km, I try to hit at least the 10 k step mark.
Yes my husband and I are fanatic walkers.

Vexing! I love it…terrific words in your post to perfectly describe how I feel when I exercise…which other than Yoga stretches and a little weight lifting, is only a bit of gardening and walking. I don’t think I am ever going to do a sit-up again. Susie, I admire you! Kathy

You left me breathless just reading about your exercise regimen. I told you when you first began how I took the yoga and pilates class and supposedly they were advertised as a “beginner” class and the attendees were not beginners, just I was. They were all “pupils” who were had taken her class before and lacked the ability to do the yoga at home and did better in a structured environment. I was always behind the group and they were experienced and I dropped out of both the yoga and the pilates class. I thought I was smart by taking the refund check for the two classes and buying a portable DVD player with two tapes – one yoga and one pilates. my mom said “you need the structure of a class – you should not have quit, you have just wasted your money.” So, did I waste my money? Of course – everything, and oh yes, a “how to” book just in case the DVDs were not clear, all sitting in the box. DVDs are still shrink wrapped. At least you are following through, no matter how difficult it is … pat yourself on the back Susie.

Otensia,
Every evening come 5 pm, I panic now, not knowing what the torture( exercise) planned for the day is . It is slowly becoming nightmarish. Why do I still go ? Perhaps because I don’t care any more ? Or I like making people laugh at my antics ?

Yikes! Is that a trainer you have or a torturer, Susie? I don’t know what a roller is, but it looks dangerous. I know I’d be good at the burping part. Oh wait, that was burpees. I have no idea what those are. I would flunk gym. But you are doing a stellar job!
